James was born and raised in Cardiff and graduated with a BSc (Hons) Pharmacology from Portsmouth Polytechnic in 1990, He completed his PhD at the University of Aston and Wellcome Research Laboratories (Beckenham, Kent), before joining Sandoz Pharmaceuticals as a Clinical Research Associate. In 1994, he moved to Canada to commence a research fellowship at the University of Western Ontario to explore the role of nitric oxide in neonatal necrotising enterocolitis. James returned to Portsmouth in 1997 as a lecturer in Pharmacology where he has occupied a number of roles including Course Leader and Division Head of Pharmacology and Associate Head for Global Engagement. James has extensive experience as an external examiner for pharmacy and pharmacology and is an active member of The British Pharmacological Society, having served two terms on the Education and Training Committee. He is passionate about pharmacology and clinical education and has published over 40 peer reviewed articles in the field of pharmacology, cell signalling and gastroenterology. His most recent research interest is the role of the cannabinoid system in smooth muscle contraction.
